Nova Scotia forest landowners are invited to attend a Woodlot Management field day on March 7 at Pat and Janet O’Toole’s, woodlot in Carroll’s Corner, Halifax County.
This free event is part of a new “mentorship” program that aims to create opportunities for family forest owners to learn from each other, and give experienced owners a chance to share their knowledge.
The O’Tooles, who were 2012 Provincial Woodlot Owners of the Year, will take their guests on a guided tour of their CSA-Certified Woodlot on the edge of farm country and rolling hills near Dutch Settlement. Participants will get a practical look at Selection Management techniques, and non-timber forest products, sugar bush management and maple syrup production. Lunch will be provided and then certified accountant Michael Jodrey will give a 1-hour presentation on woodlot taxes and estate planning.
The tour will end at the O’Toole’s sugar shack.
The field day will run from 10 am to 2 pm on March 7. Registration for this event is required as the number of participants may be limited. For more information, or to reserve a place, contact the Federation of Nova Scotia Woodland Owners and John MacDougall at (902) 639-2041 or email: email@example.com
(The mentorship program is a partnership between the Federation of Nova Scotia Woodland Owners, the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, and the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association, and is funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. Each event aims to enhance the information provided in NSDNR’s Woodlot Management Home Study Series.)
